The idea
Grocers, restaurants and farms end most days with good food they can't sell: bread, produce, prepared meals. Someone nearby would gladly pick it up, but the store has ten minutes, not an afternoon, and nobody signs up for another app to give away a tray of rolls. Surplus Bell takes that friction out. The donor sends one email, or fills in a short form, and a volunteer is on the way. We're starting in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.
How it works
- One email from the donor. No account. They write what they have the way they'd tell a friend, and the app reads it. A short form on the site does the same job for anyone who'd rather click.
- Confirmed before anyone is asked. Surplus Bell replies with what it understood. The donor answers yes, or corrects it.
- Volunteer lists, like a newsletter's. A coordinator keeps named lists, one for a town or a food pantry, say, and sends each offer to the lists that fit. A volunteer never gets the same offer twice.
- First to claim takes it. Volunteers claim with one click, and the pickup is arranged directly with the donor. A volunteer can take just part of an offer, and the rest stays open for the next one.
- Anyone can help. The public sign-up confirms by email before anyone is added to a list, and every offer it sends carries a one-click way out.
